Guided active camping tours in Canada

Our guided camping tours and adventures combine several of the best aspects of adventure travel into one amazing trip. For one, we believe that every trip could be better by spending your time camping instead of staying in a hotel. While the benefits are countless there are a few that really stand out to us as being particularly nice.

Camping keeps you outside during the best times of day!

That’s right! How many times have you arrived at your hotel and gone to check in as the sun starts getting low in the sky, unpacking your bag, having a quick shower and changing, only to come out and find that you have missed the sunset? Well, when you are camping, you have no choice but to be out and about during all those beautiful moments in a day. Our camping tours are between 7 to 12 days long, but they seem to feel like a year has gone by. It’s one big blur of sunrises, sunsets, stars coming out, the moon, and the various lighting reflecting off the surrounding mountains and lakes.

The air is so fresh during camping tours

After a week of breathing in the pristine fresh air of the mountains you can’t help but feel like a million bucks. During our guided camping tours you spend the entire day and night outside, breathing in the best air in the world. Ever heard of Usnea? It’s a kind of lichen that only grows where the air its completely pure, and the Rockies and West Coast are just covered in it. It’s always amazing to me how it feels to spend an entire summer outside, guiding the camping tours. I always think I will miss a real bed and all the conveniences of a home, but I never do, and at the end of the summer I never want to go back to living inside.

Stay in a “billion star accommodation”

It’s the little things in life that make it so special. Getting up in the middle of the night for a pee, and looking up to discover there are a billion stars twinkling in the sky. You forget all about your business and spend a few minutes soaking it in, knowing this is going to be something you will remember for the rest of your life. All in a days work when you are camping!

Where are our guided camping tours?

Our camping adventures take place all across Western Canada, and focus mainly on the most beautiful areas. Our tours are mainly in the following three areas:

Camping on Vancouver Island

Join one of our Vancouver Island camping tours to immerse yourself in the spectacular natural beauty of the west coast. The air is salty and fresh, blowing in from the open ocean. Massive old growth forests surround you, with the trees filtering out the air and providing shelter and protection from the elements. There are tons of places on Vancouver Island to choose from and deciding on the best camping on Vancouver Island is very tough. Our tours allow our guests to experience the best of several camping areas on Vancouver Island, with some time spent in the Southwest, along the shores of Sproat Lake, on the West Coast near Tofino, and in the mountains further north. Our Vancouver Island camping tours are some of our favourite adventures in British Columbia.

camping on the west coast

Though the West Coast can be interpreted as several areas in British Columbia, we are talking about the Coast Mountains, surrounding Vancouver, Whistler, Squamish and beyond. There are several of the best places in BC to camp along this route, with some of the campgrounds being right in the mountains, some along the ocean, and some in the desert on the east side of the Coast Mountains. The West Coast would be a great option for your next camping trip in BC. Our guided camping trips for small groups start in Vancouver and visit Squamish, Whistler and into the heart of the Coast Mountains, before spilling out into the fringes of the desert in the stunning rain shadow of the mountain range. This area is full of hiking and lots of other adventures like rafting, hot springs, biking, climbing and much more.

Camping in the Canadian Rockies

Camping in the Canadian Rockies is some of the best camping in Canada, with tons of campgrounds available through all the national parks. You can go camping in Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Yoho National Park and Kananaskis Country.

Camping in Banff National Park is conveniently close to Calgary, and allows for some side trips into the town of Banff. There are tons of amazing hikes and scenic attractions to keep you busy. You can camp at several campgrounds around the Park, including Lake Louise, Johnston Canyon, Tunnel Mountain and Two Jack Lake.

Camping in Jasper is just as amazing, and maybe a little more low key. The valley is wider, and there is a ton of wildlife travelling up the valley floors. We like to camp at Wapiti campground, but there is also Whistlers and Wabaso. The campsites here are fairly easy to book too, which is nice.

Camping in Yoho National Park is a little tougher, because there are only a few reservable campsites in the entire park. That being said, it is very beautiful here and there are a ton of hikes and scenic attractions nearby. Yoho is perhaps the most underrated of the mountain parks.

Camping Tours In Alaska

Join a guided active tour with us in Alaska and spend your idle time camped out in some of the most impressive places in North America! Why not spend the evening gazing at a massive glacier, or watching out for whales or perhaps even watching the northern lights?

Delicious camp food, mixed with fun restaurant meals, plus a healthy mix of wilderness camping, cabins and hotels let you change it up to have a break when you need it. Spend 12 days camping in Alaska in Denali National Park, Wrangell St Elias National Park, Valdez and Seward, each with their own incredible show to put on for you! Try rafting, whale watching, hike on glaciers, sea kayak among icebergs and more on this active camping tour in Alaska!

What to bring on your camping tour in canada

Luckily, with our guided camping tours the majority of the required equipment is provided by us, so you can pack light and still be really well equipped for your camping trip. We provide a top notch tent to use, as well as an ultra comfy sleeping pad that will surprise you with how comfortable it is. You can bring your own sleeping bag, or rent one of ours, which is very warm.

There are a few important items to make sure you pack for your camping tour. These include a rain jacket, a bathing suit to swim and soak in hot springs, plus a good pair of walking shoes to use on the guided hikes. These don’t need to be hiking boots, just something you can comfortably walk on uneven ground in for a few hours. Having a small day pack helps a lot as well, which you can use to carry personal items during the day hikes, like sun screen, a water bottle and an extra layer.

Don’t worry, you won’t need bug spray, bear spray or any other fancy gear!

solo travel and camping tours

We welcome solo travelers on our guided trips and you will feel right at home. Over half our guests are solo travelers! If you are a solo traveler you can book the tour double occupancy and be paired with another solo guest of the same sex. Having a tent mate is a nice opportunity to team up in setting up the tent, and have someone to chat with and tell ghost stories to before bed. That being said, you can also opt to upgrade to a single tent and have the whole thing to yourself.

When is the best time to go camping?

When is the best time to go camping in British Columbia?

BC is blessed with early springs and late winters, so the camping season is actually very long. There are still some times of year that tend to be most reliable for weather too. I personally like camping in September the best. People often think the best time to camp in BC is July, and don’t get me wrong- camping in July is very nice, but I find there is a bit of a delayed effect from the sun warming the region up. The lakes take longer to warm, and I think the best balance is when the ocean and lakes have warmed up, and the air is just starting to cool again. This is the least foggy time on the west coast. This is also after the majority of fire season in the interior of BC, which means clearer skies. This is also well after the bug season has ended, although bugs are very mild in BC anyway. Best of all, this is also when people are back to work and school and the crowds have disappeared.

When is the best time to go camping in the canadian rockies?

The Rockies are very pleasant for camping from the beginning of June through the end of September, with a few caveats. You can’t reserve sites until mid June, and it can snow in the Rockies early in September. One factor to keep in mind is dodging the smoke season, which can be a bit of a downer on particularly active forest fire summers. The fires are usually nowhere near the Rockies, but the smoke can travel for hundreds of kilometres up the mountain valleys. I personally like to camp at the end of June and beginning of July, or at the beginning of September. The early dates are best for planning your trip before the smoke can get bad, and the latter still captures some of the best summer weather, once the crowds have gone home, with a slight chance of snow.
