The summer season in New Zealand is from late November to the end of March. The peak months for travel on New Zealand tours are December, January and February. During this time, you can expect the warmest temperatures, least amount of precipitation and the most sun.
The fall and winter weather approaches from the South, working its way further North, so the season changes to autumn later the further north you travel.
We recommend traveling to New Zealand in January, February or March for the best overall experience.

There are a few amazing road trip routes in New Zealand
South Island South Half: From Christchurch head West to the West Coast, then South to Franz Josef and onward to Wanaka and Queenstown. Next visit Fiordland National Park, and then return North along the East side of the Island, passing Mount Cook on your return.
South Island North Half: From Christchurch, head north through the Inland Scenic Route to explore Arthurs Pass and Lewis Pass, then head up to Abel Tasman National Park and Nelson area. Pass Marlborough Sound and Kaikoura on your return towards Christchurch.
